Blood collection technique (Capillary Blood )

Blood sample collection

Principle:-  Patient’s request forms for tests should be read and checked properly. The tests requested should be noted carefully. Before collecting specimens all containers must be labeled properly giving full details of the patient’s identification. Blood samples can be gathered from three different sources:

1.           Capillary Blood sample collection. 
2.           Venous blood sample collection 
3.        Arterial blood sample collection

     Capillary Blood sample collection: - 

This method is occasionally used to draw only a minimal volume of blood.

*Site of collection of capillary blood sample collection-


1. Fingertip.

2. Nose tip.

3. Ear lobe.

4. Legs heal [In Children].

5. Thumb pad.

Requirements:-

1. Spirit

2. Cotton

3. Lancet

Procedure:-

1. Sterile the collection site with spirit or alcohol. 
2. Warm the area 
3. Hold the site and pick sharply at 2 mm deep 
4. Wipe out the first drop of blood 
5. Collect sufficient blood.
